Opis fabuły:
Rok 2089. Archeolodzy Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) i Charlie Holloway (Logan Marshall-Green) odkrywają w Szkocji piktogramy wykonane ponad 35000 lat wcześniej. Podobne znaki pojawiały się w kulturach niemal wszystkich starożytnych cywilizacji. Shaw i Holloway dochodzą do wniosku, że ludzkość mogła zostać stworzona przez pozaziemską inteligencję, którą nazywają "Inżynierami". Niecałe trzy lata później statek badawczy Prometeusz dociera od znajdującego się na obrzeżach wszechświata układu słonecznego. Kapitanem statku jest Janek (Idris Elba), a w skład ekspedycji, oprócz Elizabeth i Charliego, wchodzą miedzy innymi android David (Michael Fassbender) oraz Meredith Vickers (Charlize Theron), przedstawicielka korporacji finansującej badania. Celem misji jest ustalenie kto i w jakim celu stworzył ludzkość. Badacze nie spodziewają się jednak, że szukanie odpowiedzi na pytania o pochodzenie ludzkości może doprowadzić do jej końca.
